Faux fur blankets come in various colors and sizes, bringing warmth and style to any home. But over time, they can lose their softness and develop matting due to exposure to heat, dirt, and moisture.

Don't worry! With these simple steps below, you can revive the plush feel of your favorite faux fur blanket. Here's how to do it.

How to Make Your Faux Fur Blanket Soft Again

1. Remove Excess Dirt and Oil

Start by tackling any dirt and oil buildup on your blanket. Sprinkle cornmeal over the surface and gently work it into the fibers with a soft brush or sponge. Let it sit overnight to absorb moisture and oils. The next day, shake out the excess powder and brush the blanket to remove any remaining residue.

2. Remove Pilling

Pilling, the formation of lint balls on the surface of the blanket, can make it feel rough and unappealing. To remove any pills from the faux fur, use a fabric lint remover or pill shaver.

To avoid creating a mess, wrap a piece of tape around your hand with the sticky side facing outward, then press it onto the blanket to catch loose pills as you shave.

3. Brush Your Faux Fur Blanket

Regular brushing helps maintain the softness and appearance of your faux fur blanket. Simply lay it flat on a firm surface and use a soft-bristle brush to comb through the fibers in all directions—vertically, horizontally, and diagonally. This process also helps fluff the fur and remove any tangles or clumps.

4. Wash the Blanket

When it's time to give your faux fur blanket a deeper clean, follow these washing tips:

  • Avoid fabric softeners, as they can cause fibers to stick together.
  • Opt for a delicate wash cycle with cool water.
  • Use a mild detergent or hair conditioner mixed with water as a fabric softener alternative.
  • Air dry your blanket to maintain its texture and prevent damage from heat.

For thorough cleaning, you have two options:

Machine Washing: If your blanket requires a thorough cleaning, machine wash it on a gentle cycle no more than twice a year. Use cool water and avoid harsh cleaning solutions that may harm the fibers.

Manual or Hand Washing: For blankets with delicate embellishments like beading or embroidery, hand washing is the best option to prevent damage. Use a mixture of mild detergent and water, or white vinegar for Sherpa fleece blankets, and gently wash by hand in cool water.
